When you think about publishing a great website for your business, you probably spend most of your time and energy focusing on the design. You’re not alone.
Make no mistake. Design is important. If your website doesn’t look good and isn’t user-friendly, you’re not going to have much success, but the truth is that design is only one element that influences a website’s effectiveness.
Another key element is the content on your website. See, it doesn’t matter how great your website looks, how well it ranks in the search engines, or how much traffic it gets. If your website copy doesn’t immediately engage visitors and motivate them to take action, it's all for nothing. You won’t see any results, because your website won’t be generating any leads or sales.
Why Professionally-Written Website Content Matters
Too many times, the content on a company's website is an afterthought. No planning goes into it, and someone from the company just quickly scratches out a few words about their business and the products and services they offer.
Inevitably, they begin to wonder why their website isn't generating any business. They usually blame it on web marketing as a whole, writing it off as a scam. The reality is that poor content is one of the main reasons websites underperform.
Just like you should leave the design of your website to a professional graphic designer, you should leave the content of your website to a professional copywriter. A seasoned copywriter knows how to:
- Hook website visitors quickly, so they keep reading
- Focus messages on the benefits your customers care about most
- Create optimised content that ranks better in the search engines
- Motivate visitors to take action, helping you get more leads and sales through your website
You can't treat the copy on your website as filler. It's the very foundation of your internet marketing campaign. Everything else that you do – SEO, social media marketing, etc. – is for nothing if the content on your website doesn't convert visitors into customers.
You Must Encourage Visitors to Take Action
Wondering why your website isn't generating any leads or making any sales? Well, are you asking your website visitors to do what you want them to do? If you're not telling them to place an order, how can you expect them to order your products? If you’re not asking them to call you today for a free consultation, is it really a wonder that your phone isn’t ringing?
This isn't rocket science. It's actually quite simple. If you want somebody to do something, you need to tell them what you want them to do.
That's why every sales-driven page on your website needs to have a call to action. When creating a page, you need to know what the goal of that page is. Is it to make a sale now? Is it to get the visitor to fill out a form for more information? Know the goal, and create a clear, concise call to action based upon that.
Take a look at your website. Do you think the content could be better?
